Business learnings #1 - Long term goals vs short term success

Once upon a time, in the vibrant streets of India, I embarked on a journey to explore the captivating world of photography. It was a sunny Monday morning when I set out for work, eagerly carrying my camera and a heart full of dreams.

As I approached a bustling signal, my attention was caught by a humble figure gracefully navigating through the sea of cars. This person, with an air of humility, politely asked for money without imposing on others. I had noticed him before and had made it a habit to offer him a small sum every time I passed this signal. His unassuming nature made it easier for me to extend a helping hand, even when I had little to spare.

But this story isn’t just about a random encounter with a stranger in need; it’s about a profound act of kindness that resonated with me throughout the years. You see, back when I was an amateur photographer, eager to hone my skills, I found myself in the enchanting city of Pune. I parked my bike and wandered the streets, capturing the essence of life through my lens.

One fateful day, upon returning to my bike, I was dismayed to find excrement smeared across my seat. As a young and naive individual, I was repulsed by the mess and clueless about how to clean it. In my moment of distress, an unexpected savior emerged from the shadows. It was the same person I had encountered earlier, the beggar from the signal. Without uttering a single word, he swiftly plucked a few leaves from the street and used them to wipe away the filth, leaving my bike seat spotless. And just like that, he vanished into thin air.

Although he was a beggar, that day, he didn’t ask me for anything, understanding that I was just a child. Deeply touched by his simple yet selfless act, I hopped on my bike and rode home, the image of his kindness etched in my mind.

Over a decade has passed since that unforgettable incident, and now, as a seasoned photographer, I continue to encounter different people and businesses on my creative journey. Reflecting on that act of goodwill, I have come to realize the power of giving and the impact it can have on one’s life.

Applying this philosophy to my photography business, I firmly believe in the importance of providing references and recommendations to others, even if it may not directly benefit me in the present. In the long run, these gestures of goodwill always find their way back to you, building a network of trust and support.

Furthermore, I have chosen not to take commissions from my clients. Instead, I focus on earning their goodwill and fostering genuine relationships. For me, it’s not about short-term gains but rather the enduring value of integrity and reputation that will stand the test of time.

So, in the realm of lifestyle photography in India, product photography in India, e-commerce shoots in Mumbai, and jewelry photography in Pune, I strive to bring not only exceptional visual aesthetics but also a commitment to embody the spirit of kindness and generosity. Because in the tapestry of life, it is these simple acts that weave the most beautiful stories and leave an indelible mark on our hearts.
